Forward Land Forces Battle Group Bulgaria is one of NATO’s multinational battlegroups deployed along the Alliance’s south-eastern flank. Established in 2022 following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it has been led by Italy as framework nation since October 2022.
Based at the Novo Selo Training Area, the Battlegroup brings together forces from Italy, host nation Bulgaria, and contributing Allies Albania, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Türkiye and the United States.
Operating under the command of Headquarters Multinational Division South-East, the Battlegroup conducts regular multinational and combined-arms training alongside Bulgarian and other Allied forces. It is a fully combat-capable, flexible and interoperable formation that can be reinforced and scaled up to brigade size, where and when required.
Its presence strengthens NATO’s deterrence and defence posture in Bulgaria, on the Alliance’s south-eastern flank and in the wider Black Sea region. It also demonstrates Alliance solidarity and NATO’s commitment to the principle that an attack against one Ally is considered an attack against all.
